Problem

How do I operate Virtual Weather Station with the USB version of WeatherLink 5.8.0 or greater?

Discussion

The older versions of WeatherLink used a USB to serial driver to communicate to the USB version of the WeatherLink data logger. WeatherLink 5.8 (or greater) uses direct USB communication. However, the drivers for this direct USB communication are not supported by Davis Instruments at the moment. In the mean time, please follow this workaround procedure.

Solution

If you are running WeatherLink 5.8.2 or greater:
  1. Install the WeatherLink USB to serial drivers. From the Windows desktop, Select Start | All Programs | WeatherLink (or WeatherLink 5.8.2 or greater) CP210X USB to Serial Converter. A DOS window will launch and Press any key to continue. You will receive the message "Successfully converter the device from USB to Virtual Serial". Press any key to exit.
  2. Run WeatherLink 5.8.2 (or greater). Select Setup | Communication from the menubar, and the Serial Communications radial button and Auto Detect.
    (a) If working properly, it will state "VantagePro station found on COMx" where x is the comport number. Make a note of this comport number. Proceed to Step 4.
    (b) If not working properly, proceed to Step 3.
  3. If WeatherLink did not find the comport, go to your Device Manager. From Windows desktop, select Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager and select + next to Ports (COM & LPT). Look for Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COMx), where x is the comport number. Make a note of this comport number.
  4. Close WeatherLink and launch Virtual Weather Station. Select Communication | Communication from the menubar, and enter this comport number. Virtual Weather Station will prompt you to relaunch the program.
If the comport assigned is greater then 1-9, go to step 5.
  5. If the comport assigned is greater the COM9, go to your Device Manager. From Windows desktop, select Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager and select + next to Ports (COM & LPT). Look for Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COMx), where x is the comport number. Right click on this driver and select Properties | Port Settings | Advanced. Change the comport to any value between 1-9 (that is not in use) and select OK. Enter this comort in Virtual Weather Station. Select Communication | Communication from the menubar, and enter this comport number. Virtual Weather Station will prompt you to relaunch the program.
If you are running WeatherLink 5.8.1 or less:
  1. To emulate a serial port through a USB device, you will need to download and install the latest serial to USB drivers. The latest version can be found here:
    https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx
Select the latest VCP Driver Kit and install this file.
  2. Install latest WeatherLink Serial converter utility. Visit the following link:
    http://www.davisnet.com/support/weather/software_driver.asp
and download the following file: WeatherLink Utility: CP210X USB to Serial Converter, v2.0
    Note:
Select Save and save CP210X_ USB _Serial_Converter_ver2.exe to C:\Program Files\WeatherLink. DO NOT run CP210X_USB_Serial_Converter_ver2.exe over the web and do not copy it anywhere else other than the WeatherLink directory – it must be executed from within the WeatherLink directory.
Execute this file from within the C:\Program Files\WeatherLink directory.
  3. Run WeatherLink 5.8.1 (or less). Select Setup | Communication from the menubar, and the Serial Communications radial button and Auto Detect.
    (a) If working properly, it will state "VantagePro station found on COMx" where x is the comport number. Make a note of this comport number. Proceed to Step 5.
    (b) If not working properly, proceed to Step 4.
  5. Close WeatherLink and launch Virtual Weather Station. Select Communication | Communication from the menubar, and enter this comport number. Virtual Weather Station will prompt you to relaunch the program.
If the comport assigned is greater then 1-9, go to step 6.
