WMR-968, outdoor sensor no longer transmits
The outdoor thermo-hygrometer, rain gauge or anemometer are no longer transmitting.
The sensor is no longer transmitting, resulting in dashes (---) on the display unit.
There are several requirements for proper installation prior to troubleshooting this issue.
Make sure the sensor is plugged into the solar transmitter. The transmitter will not blink unless it is plugged into the sensor.
Make sure the transmitter is greater then 10 feet away and less then 300' feet line of sight. Allow 20% margin for each wall or large obstruction. For example, if transmitting through one wall:
Transmission Distance (through one wall) = 300 x 0.8 or 240 feet.
Transmission Distance (through two walls) = 300 x 0.8 x 0.8 or 192 feet
Make sure you are not transmitting through a metal barrier. Metal shields radio frequency (RF) waves.
Make sure the sensor is not transmitting through earth or ground. Placing the transmitter down a hill will result in loss of communication.
If none of the sensors report into the console, the issue is likely the display console. Cycle power on the display console. If the problem persists, replace the display console (see below). If the one or more of the sensors are working, continue to the next step.
If this is a new installation, make sure the plastic strip has been removed from the battery compartment of the solar transmitter. In this case, the battery light will be on all of the time.
Reset your display console. Simply resetting your display will sometimes clear the issue, particularly if you just changed the batteries in the remote solar transmitter. To reset the console, remove the batteries in the back of the unit, disconnect from AC power and wait 10 seconds. Re-apply power.
Check to see if the remote transmitters are flashing. The solar transmitter LED will flash every 14 seconds for the anemometer and one minute for the thermo-hygrometer and the rain gauge. If the unit is not flashing, change the AA batteries (we recommend
lithium AA batteries
which are cold weather, long lasting battery). After changing the batteries and confirming the transmitter LED is flashing, reset the console by powering down and powering up (completely remove the batteries and AC power).
If the transmitter light is on all of the time (not flashing), there is a short circuit on the sensor board. Replace the either the thermo-hygrometer, rain gauge or anemometer and not the solar transmitter (
If the transmitter is off all of the time (not flashing), either there is an open circuit on the sensor board, or the batteries have failed in the transmitter.
To determine if the sensor or transmitter has failed, swap transmitters with a known good working sensor. For example, if the rain gauge is working but the thermo-hygrometer is not working, swap the rain gauge and thermo-hygrometer solar transmitters (they are all interchangeable). After you swap transmitters, reset the console by powering down and powering up (completely remove the batteries and AC power). . If the problem follows the transmitter, replace the solar transmitter (
). If the problem remains with the sensor (anemometer, rain gauge or thermo-hygrometer) replace the sensor (
If the anemometer wind direction is working and not wind speed (or visa versa), the anemometer has failed and not the transmitter. If the transmitter is not working, both sensors would sensors would not be transmitting.
If the thermo-hygrometer temperature is working and the humidity is not (or visa versa), the thermo-hygrometer has failed and not the transmitter. If the transmitter is not working, both sensors would sensors would not be transmitting.
The WMR-968 has a one year factory warranty. Please contact Oregon Scientific directly at 800-853-8883.
If you have to replace lots of parts, it may make sense to purchase a new WMR-968 weather station (
). There are several advantages - both consoles can be used in two different locations and with the
Virtual Weather Station
software, it allows you to place one console next to the computer and another console somewhere else in the house or facility.
Returns, Exchanges, and Warranty
If the problem occurs in the first 30 days after purchase, please visit
to exchange the unit.
You can call Oregon Scientific support at 800-853-8883 and if the unit is failed and still under warranty (1 year), they will replace it for you. If the unit is no longer under warranty,
offers replacement parts.
